Power to the Power Smoothie!

Think smoothies are only for summer? Think again. I make a smoothie almost EVERY SINGLE DAY, even on freezing cold days like today. I strongly believe one meal a day should be liquid. First of all, it gives my digestive system a much-needed rest. Plus, I can add a lot of nutrients and vitamins to make one powerful drink to start my day.

A few things I keep on hand to make smoothie-making a breeze:

  1. Powders: protein powder (I prefer Sunwarrior brands), maca powder, green powder with advanced multivitamins
  2. Liquids: coconut milk, almond milk (make your own!), soy milk, coconut yogurt (in place of regular yogurt if you're going vegan), chlorophyll with aloe vera juice
  3. Add-ins: chia seeds, frozen organic fruits and veggies, nuts, hempseeds, flaxseeds, almond butter, greens, MCT oil, dates

To blend, I use a Vitamix. The Nutribullet is great, too (and a bit more affordable).

Once you're stocked, it's easy.

My secret? NEVER MEASURE ANYTHING! That's it! Most ingredients go well together, so it's (nearly) impossible to screw up. Like it sweet? Throw in some dates. Thicker? Add chia seeds or half a banana. I almost always use kale and my homemade almond milk to get started and then add in whatever I have on hand.

Change up your usual summer berry smoothies + throw in some seasonal fruits + veggies (like cranberries or pumpkin). Add a little cinnamon or nutmeg.  Experiment. Have fun.

I came across these recipes on Real Simple + will be trying them out - OF COURSE with some modifications to fit my vegan diet. I'll let you know how they turn out!

Enjoy your weekend, friends!
